Maryland Meadworks
About
Maryland Meadworks is a meadery and taproom in Hyattsville run by founder and head mead maker Ken Carter. He started homebrewing beer in the 1980s after his wife, Rumi, gave him a brewing kit for Christmas, and he later worked at John Harvard’s Brewpub in downtown Washington as a host and assistant brewer. He set aside the idea of opening his own place while raising a family and kept brewing at home. Later, his friend Dave Bol, a biologist, introduced him to mead. Carter went on to take two advanced mead-making workshops at UC Davis and visited Moonlight Meadery in New Hampshire to learn from its owner. The tap list ranges from traditional high-gravity sweet meads that each showcase a different honey to more experimental styles. The taproom serves barbecue from a food partner and keeps a busy calendar of music, film nights and themed parties.
